Why fabrication backfires

Adding keywords or skills you do not have might improve a keyword match score in the short term. But resumes get read by humans. Recruiters ask follow-up questions. Technical interviews probe depth.

A resume that overstates your experience creates a gap between what you claimed and what you can demonstrate, and that gap is usually discovered at the worst possible moment.

Truthfulness and fabrication questions

What does Forte consider 'fabrication'?+
Any claim in the tailored output that is not supported by the source resume. Adding a skill not mentioned in any work or project entry is fabrication. Inserting a metric that does not appear in the source is fabrication. Inflating a job title is fabrication. Describing experience with a tool the resume does not mention is fabrication. The rule applies to small embellishments and large inventions equally: if the evidence is not in the source resume, the claim cannot appear in the tailored output.
How does Forte know what is supported and what is not?+
The tailoring prompt gives the model the full text of your original resume and instructs it to ground every claim in that text. The evaluation pass then independently re-reads the tailored output and the source resume and flags any drift. This two-model setup catches cases where the tailoring model is tempted to extrapolate, because the evaluation model has no incentive to defend the extrapolation. Anything flagged goes through repair before the output is returned to you.
Can I add experience that is not in my resume but is true?+
Yes, through the resume itself rather than through tailoring. The standard pattern is: add the experience to your resume in plain language (a new bullet, a new project entry, a skill you forgot to list), then run the tailor. Forte will pick up the new evidence and use it. The reason this matters is that the constraint is not 'Forte cannot use real experience' but 'Forte cannot invent experience'. If it is real, write it down and the tailor will work with it.
What if a job description requires a skill I almost have?+
The honest answer depends on what 'almost' means. If you have used a closely related tool (Python instead of Ruby, Postgres instead of MySQL) and the JD's framing is flexible, Forte may surface the related experience. If the JD is asking for something specific you have not done, no version of the tailor will pretend you have it. In those cases, the fit score will reflect the real gap and your decision becomes whether to apply anyway and address the gap in the interview, or focus on a different role where the match is stronger.
Is there any way to override the truthfulness constraint?+
No. There is no setting, no premium tier, no workaround. The constraint is enforced in the prompt and verified in the evaluation, and we have no path that disables either. Asking for a more 'aggressive' tailoring will get you a stronger framing of what your resume already supports, not new content that contradicts it. This is intentional and we have no plans to relax it.
Does this make Forte slower than other AI tools?+
Marginally. The grounding constraints add some latency to the tailoring step and the evaluation pass adds another five to fifteen seconds. The total flow from upload to result is still under a minute for the vast majority of resumes, and the trade-off is a tailored resume you can actually defend rather than one that needs hedging in the interview.
Have other candidates run into trouble with AI-generated resumes?+
Yes, often. The most common pattern is a candidate using a generic chat model to 'tailor' a resume, the model invents a tool or a metric to make the bullet stronger, the candidate does not notice, the recruiter asks about it in the screen, and the conversation falls apart in real time. The pattern is common enough that some recruiters now explicitly probe specific details of AI-friendly resumes. Forte exists because we believe candidates with real experience deserve a tool that surfaces that experience without falling into the same trap.
